Nicaragua
is a land of lakes and volcanoes, and Mombacho Volcano towers
above the very shores of the country's largest lake. Rising
to a maximum of 1,345 meters (4,045 feet) above sea level,
much of Mombacho is a Natural Reserve, and there are proposals
in place to give National Park status to these protected areas.
The
beautifully designed and maintained trail system within the
reserve allows visitors to explore the special ecosystems
the volcano has to offer. Mombacho and Maderas Volcanoes (located
on Isla Ometepe) are the only protected virgin cloud forest
in the Pacific region of Nicaragua. These cloud forests contain
high levels of biodiversity that have existed within the centuries
old trees since Pre-Columbian times. These cloud forests have
been so well preserved, that as late as 1998 a new species
of salamander endemic to Mombacho Volcano, the Bolitoglossa
mombachoensis, was discovered.
The
trails lead visitors through this cloud forest world and out
onto alpine like tundra, where winds buffet the native flora,
and sulfurous steam rises from fumaroles. There are also Miradores
providing breathtaking views of the vastness of Lake Nicaragua
with the twin peaks of Isla Ometepe rising from the waters,
and the colonial city of Granada far below.
Located
10 kilometers Southwest of Granada, Mombacho is also the home
of Mombotour's private reserve El Progresso. Mombotour S.A.
offers various packages for visitors to enjoy one to three
nights in Hacienda Progresso, along with the now famous canopy
tour, as well as other options such as bird watching, horseback
riding, kayaking, coffee tours, visits to Masaya Volcano National
Park and Masaya handicraft markets-all with some of the best
bilingual Naturalists guides in Nicaragua.
