What is Ecotourism?
Ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural places that conserves the environment and sustains the well being of the local people.
How does Mombotour help?
1. Utilizing tourism to acquire and protect endangered rain forest, animals and plants.
2. Educating and motivating guests into being actively aware of conservation and rain forest preservation.
3. Aiding and integrating with the local community for sustainable development.
Conservation Efforts & Community Development:

Employee Personal Development and Employee-Guest Interaction:

- All Mombotour employees are Nicaraguan from Granada or nearby local villages.
- All employees receive regular training on topics related to Nicaragua's nature and history.
- Local guides inform guests of local customs and cross-cultural issues.
- Mombotour staff receives an average salary 20% above average tourism salaries paid in Nicaragua.
- All visitors to Hacienda Cutirre receive a complete orientation on socio-economic and nature conservation related issues by our bi-lingual guides. The goal of these orientations is to make tourists aware of the importance of his or her visit and the positive effects of sustainable tourism on the local community and ecosystems.
- Distribution of literature to guests and others about global and local environmental topics.

Mombotour's Relationship with Local Community and Environment:

- Mombotour rents horses for our horseback riding tours from small neighboring farmers, offering them an additional source of income.
- Typical dishes using locally grown food are served to the guests.
- We offer joint packages together with the Cocibolca Foundation that administers the Mombacho Natural Reserve.
- All tours are operated in a private nature reserve: Hacienda Cutirre, and access to the interior of the private reserve is by professional guide only.
- All non-biodegradable waste is taken out of Hacienda Cutirre to be correctly disposed of in Granada
- No trees or branches were cut during the construction and operation of the Hacienda Cutirre Canopy Tour. Trees were not "hurt" since we did not use nails or screws.
- All buildings and paths incorporate erosion control.
- Solar power will be considered with sufficient funds.
- The Hacienda Cutirre coffee is shade grown, harvested by hand and dried in the sun. The coffee plantation is home to a large array of animals and offers great biodiversity. Currently the production is not 100% organic, although there are plans to convert Hacienda Cutirre to an organic coffee plantation in the near future. All organic waste from the coffee is turned into natural fertilizer.
- In June 2002 Mombotour plans to initiate a volunteer reforestation program where guests are invited to plant native trees.
- Mombotour regularly invites research groups and scientists to Hacienda Cutirre for rain forest study.
- There are current plans to include an education and research center among the many attractions that Mombotour has to offer.
